Survey: shoppers can eat healthily this Christmas

Thursday, 18 December 2008
Shoppers can still eat healthily this Christmas if they look around for alternatives to their usual choices, according to new research out today.

One Christmas dinner collected by mySupermarket.co.uk contained 2,603 calories, while the healthier one just 2,196.

The list of food included traditional Christmas dinner items such as turkey, stuffing, sausages and pudding.

Spokesperson Johnny Steel said: "With food being an important element of Christmas Day, many families assume that it's going to be a calorific meal, but our data shows that it doesn't have to be.

"By making a few simple changes, people can save over 400 calories, still have the Christmas dinner they want and do it all without sacrificing their favourite foods.

"People are busy this time of year, but the good news is that the festive shop doesn't have to take longer than usual."

The firm considered Christmas foods from the online sites of Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Ocado during the research.

A report released today by comparison company Which? said many "diet" food options in fact contain more calories than their standard counterparts.
