Retailers urged to show suppliers more respect

Tuesday, 16 December 2008
The National Farmers Union in Scotland (NFUS) believes major retailers need to show more support to suppliers after a large vegetable producer said it is reviewing its staff numbers.

NFUS president Jim McLaren said if retailers do not make agreements with suppliers fairer, then food security will be hit, following the review announcement from Kettle Produce.

He told the Farmers Guardian: "Arrangements operate on little more than day to day gentlemen's agreements, with all the power lying with the retailers.

"Retailers seem incapable of thinking beyond the supply of the next truckload of fresh produce at the back door of the store.

"Where that produce will come from in the future, and to what standards and in what far off country it will be produced, seems to be of no concern to them."

Bosses at Kettle Produce reportedly said that up to 100 positions could be lost.

Last weekend supermarkets revealed they had contingency plans in place because they are fearful suppliers could go out of business in the coming 12 months.

And earlier this month, both Tesco and Asda denied that they are exploiting workers in Bangladesh.
