| Wednesday, 10 December 2008 | |||||
Shoppers believe it is acceptable for supermarkets to sell cigarettes, according to new exclusive TalkingRetail.com statistics out today.Over two-thirds of people polled by Empathy Research said the selling of tobacco products is appropriate in supermarkets, with the biggest proportion of those against such sales in the 45+ age category (28%). Those aged between 25 to 34-years-old were most in favour of multiples selling cigarettes (83%), followed by 18 to 24-year-olds (77%). The statistics came after the government said it is pressing ahead with plans to ban the visible sale of tobacco products in stores from 2011. Of those who said it is appropriate for supermarkets to sell cigarettes, 54% believed it is more convenient, 27% said they are cheaper there; while 9% think the range is better than elsewhere. However, 69% of respondents who do not believe supermarkets should have cigarettes on the shelves cited the fact the products lead to ill health for their answer. And 42% of people against tobacco sales in supermarkets contend it is more difficult to regulate sales and check the age of consumers in this environment. 15% of those polled smoke, while 54% said they have never smoked. Convenience retailers reacted angrily to the news the legislation is going to be introduced. Empathy Research (www.empathymarketing.com) polled 1,000 people from its Pigsback.com website. Weekly intelligence reports are being provided by the company. View the complete report into sales of cigarettes Related Articles

... Smoking kills people!!!!! every 6 seconds, somebody dies from a smoking related disease. 50 percent of all smokers will die from a smoking related disease. How on earth can it be that the sale of goods that kill their users is tolerated in our society. Please stop the sale of cigarettes in supermarkets and convenient stores! John Wesdorp Cheshire |
