Wine drinkers would be hit hardest by government proposals to ban some alcohol promotions in supermarkets, according to a new report. The study, carried out by Sheffield University and commissioned by the Department of Health, said wine buyers would see the greatest impact of a ban on discounts over 30%. According to the university, the more restrictive legislation is, the greater alcohol harm can be reduced. Petra Meier from the university said: "The results suggest that policies which increase the price of alcohol can bring significant health and social benefits." It found that lager and beer drinkers will be least hit by the potential changes, which were revealed as part of the Queen's Speech yesterday. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association said it has reservations about the government's plans as a whole, but welcomed its commitment to tackling irresponsible drinking. Related Articles
