Tesco performs well in accountability survey

Monday, 24 November 2008
Tesco has again performed well on the latest Accountability Rating, which measures the way businesses attempt to act and operate responsibly.

Yet the grocery retailer dropped from 11th place to 20th, something which highlights the sector's relatively poor performance when measured against other industries, the report found.

Carried out by Csrnetwrok and AccountAbility, the study also placed US chain Wal-Mart at number 64.

Last month, IDG chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch said the recession will not shift supermarkets' green agenda into the background.

Thomas Krick, Csrnetwrok senior consultant, said: "Consumers around the world are tightening their belts amidst recession fears ... sustainability factors will play less of a role in [consumers'] purchasing decisions than price.

"However, more responsible products don't always have to cost more money, and it seems clear that the overall trend of increasing consumer awareness is intact."

Krick added that many brands need to think more in-depth about sustainability as people become more concerned about what it is exactly they are buying.

A report released in October by TNS found that Brits are largely apathetic towards green retailing practices.
