Mandelson launches wage rights campaign

Wednesday, 19 November 2008
A new campaign will be launched today by business secretary Peter Mandelson attempting to highlight the new minimum wage to workers.

The It's Your Call roadshow will also inform workers about new tough penalties that mean bosses who underpay their staff will be punished more harshly.

Lord Mandelson said: "The minimum wage was introduced when I was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry ten years ago and I am so proud to see the difference it has made to the lives of millions of hard working people across the UK.

"More than one million workers benefited from its increase last month and it's important that we make sure everyone knows what they're entitled to, that's what this campaign is all about."

The Royal Assent for the Employment Act means maximum fines for underpayment of the minimum wage will be removed from April next year.

Mandelson this month said the Post Office should offer more products to people close to their homes.
