![]() Aldi, the discount supermarket, said today that it is to open 35 new stores in Ireland, creating 650 jobs. Part of a £286m expansion, the jobs will be available in the next two years, while a distribution centre will be built in Mitchelstown. UK and Ireland managing director Paul Foley, speaking as he revealed sales at Irish stores in the last year jumped 20%, said: "We are very pleased with the performance of our business in recent months and are poised to grow even further. "New customers are trying Aldi because they're more conscious of seeking out value for money." Currently, the company has 59 stores based in Ireland. Expansion had been suffocated by the Groceries Order, which was abolished two years ago. This week, figures from TNS Worldpanel revealed Aldi posted year-on-year sales growth of 23.9% in the 12 weeks until 2 November. Its market share is 3%. Related Articles
