Sainsbury's offers staff in-house qualifications

Thursday, 06 November 2008

Sainsbury's staff are set to be offered formal qualifications in subjects such as safety and stock control, which are equivalent to five GCSEs.

In the next five years, Sainsbury's said it wants to see 25% of its workforce with nationally recognised qualifications.

Other subjects included as part of the move include English and mathematics, with questions specifically tailored towards retail.

Justin King, Sainsbury's chief executive, said: "This launch demonstrates that learning never stops at Sainsbury's and every one of our colleagues can improve their skills."

Sainsbury's said it has made the step in an attempt to meet the government's targets for a more skilled workforce.

In-house NVQ Level 2 qualifications are worth five GCSEs.

The retailer reported what it called "robust" second quarter sales growth in October, thanks in part to its own label offerings.
