Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) will stop making Miller Beer in the UK from the end of the year, it announced today. The brewer said it has come to an agreement with Miller Brands UK to cease making, marketing and distributing the product from December, meaning it will be withdrawn from sales by early 2009. It said Miller Beer "no longer has a viable long-term role" to play after carrying out a review of a "highly-competitive market". Carlsberg has also revealed that it will close one of its breweries in the UK, based in Leeds. Off-trade sales managing director at S&N UK Mark Gerken said: "As the UK's leading brewer and long drinks' wholesaler, we are committed to supplying our customers with brands that meet today's consumer needs." Sales support for Miller Genuine Draft will be unaffected by the decision to delist the beer, said managing director of Miller Brands UK Nick Miller. He commented: "In a highly dynamic and competitive UK beer market, Miller Brands will continue to focus its efforts on premium brand building and we look forward to sharing our exciting and extensive plans for Miller Genuine Draft with our customers in the near future. S&N last week started a special promotion for its Heineken brand tying in to the new Bond film Quantum of Solace. Is the decision by Miller Brands to delist the product a good one? ... I liked Miller draught. No longer on sale in Glasgow. I don't like the alternatives Tennants and the other unmentionable vinegar on draught. C'mon give us our drink |
