Eggs taken off Chinese Wal-Mart shelves

Tuesday, 28 October 2008
Wal-Mart has stopped selling a brand of eggs in Chinese stores because, according to safety inspectors, they contain excessive levels of the substance melamine.

The company, which owns Asda in the UK, said that all Dalian Hanwei Enterprise Group Eggs have been removed from the shelves.

Spokeswoman for Wal-Mart Mu Mingming said the company will work closely with suppliers to ensure that all the items it sells are safe.

Director at the milk producer Han Wei said: "There are no consumers asking about protein levels in our eggs and so there is no need for us to add melamine to our eggs in the process of selling our products."

Only last week, Wal-Mart set new supplier standards for its Chinese suppliers.

It has this week also said that it will be cutting back on the number of stores it opens in America next year.

Melamine has been linked to illnesses in babies in China. Four infants died after drinking milk containing it.
