![]() Tesco's move into the discount retailing sector has not impacted on Aldi, the German retailer has claimed. Graham Hethertington, director at Aldi, said the supermarket has not "seen any difference", and that its fresh food range has been attracting those with a "Waitrose/Sainsbury's profile". And Hetherington added that the "majority" of its growth is coming from the biggest four supermarkets in the UK, including Tesco. He said that Aldi had its strongest week on record in September, reports the Guardian. "We want to be in every town in the UK and experience tells us we could have up to 3,000 stores," he said, citing the strong growth and success Aldi has seen in its homeland. "In Germany, we own 40% of the market and I don't see why we couldn't have that situation here." The comments come after the latest TNS figures revealed that discount retailers are continuing to see success as shoppers hunt out value in troubling economic times. UK and Ireland group managing director at Aldi Paul Foley recently said that the company will continue as normal despite Tesco's new business stance. According to the Times, Tesco has also spent last weekend speaking with suppliers after laying down alleged "aggressive" cash demands. Related Articles
