Survey: Food price growth slows

There has been a slowdown in food price rises, according to a new survey carried out by Verdict for the BBC.

While food prices increased by 9% in the nine months until September, they rose by only 0.6% between August and September, it discovered.

But the research company said that the prices of some products are continuing to rise briskly.

Neil Saunders from the company said that the year's global harvest has been strong and this has helped to push the cost of wheat down.

Meat and fish dropped by 3.9% in price between August and September, Verdict revealed, as fruit and vegetables dipped by 5.9% in the same period.

Both types of food had previously witnessed large increases in the nine months before this.

The figures come after Nielsen said that sales growth at the multiple retailers has slowed down in the past 12 weeks compared to the same period last year.

But mySupermarket.co.uk has found that a staple basket of groceries at some of the biggest supermarkets has increased by £740 in a year.
