Tech firm: Bargains popular through credit crunch

Friday, 10 October 2008
More cut-price sales are being witnessed in the retail industry as the credit crunch starts to eat into people's budgets, it has been claimed.

Zebra Technologies, which makes printing solutions, said that it has sold three times the number of price mark-down labels than it did this time last year.

It said that the recession is being fought off with "bargain basement tactics" and that retailers are adopting endless promotional campaigns.

Regional sales manager for the UK and Ireland Mike Pitt said: "We have observed a surge in shop sales, which comes at a time when people are closely monitoring their spending patterns."

Zebra predicted that Christmas price wars will start earlier in the year as a result of the trend.

Richard Hyman - an advisor at Deloitte - yesterday told Reuters that retailers are set for a difficult trading period over Christmas.
