![]() Sally Keeble, the Labour MP, has launched a private members' bill that could lead to minimum alcohol pricing legislation. Representatives from a number of organisations such as the British Beer and Pub Association gave their support to the proposals. Under the new plans, a Drinks Industry Council would be created, comprised of consumers, drink producers and police among others. "The industry would be involved in setting the minimum price, and the rules for in-store promotions and labelling," Keeble asserted. Yet the bill faces opposition from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). Head of communications Gavin Partington said minimum pricing is "wrong in principal". "We don't agree with what is being proposed in the bill, but we believe that the government is looking into these various issues as part of its consultation process due to complete on October 13," he commented. The WSTA has also recently said that the Liberal Democrats' plans to introduce a minimum pricing policy would not banish alcohol misuse. What do you think of the new-look TalkingRetail.com?
