Tesco withdraws Chinese candy as a precaution

White Rabbit Creamy Candies might have melamine in them, Tesco said, a substance that was used in formula milk in the Asian country, a drink consumed by four babies who later died.

The supermarket clearly said that nobody has become ill as a result of digesting the White Rabbit product and that the withdrawal is merely a pre-emptive one.

"As a precautionary measure we have withdrawn White Rabbit Candies from the very small number of UK stores that sell them as part of our ethnic range," a spokesman at Tesco said.

Police in China believe that melamine may have been added to milk bottles on purpose to give the impression they contained more protein.

Earlier in the year, Tesco recalled its own brand Beans & Sausage after small pieces of plastic were found in a minimal number of cans.
