Following comments last week that new tobacco legislation would be unfair on retailers, the Scottish Grocers' Federation (SGF) has now said that a "one size fits all" approach to tackling drinking problems is not the remedy. The SGF instead argued that more specific actions ought to be carried out to target particular elements of society, along with greater educational measures. Chief executive at the SGF John Drummond said that the proposals would be a "sweeping intervention", with the move also potentially having a negative impact upon retailers because of the costs involved. "Rather than punishing business, SGF would urge the Government to support and encourage licensees to focus on measures which continue to drive up standards and make a difference," he commented. The federation said that it is against possible alterations such as minimum pricing, a social responsibility fee and separate alcohol checkouts. Related Articles
