A retail manager from Portsmouth has walked away with a Skillsmart Retail award after an apprenticeship scheme.

Co-operative supermarket employee Steven Jenkins, 21, won the retail apprentice of the year at the Retail Week Rising Star Awards and took his accolade from TV star Theo Paphitis.

Jenkins said that he has picked up a number of great skills and these have helped him along the way.

“The apprenticeship gave me the skills and knowledge to progress and completely changed my career. To win this award is just the icing on the cake. It is an indescribable feeling," he said.

Apprenticeships manager at Skillsmart Retail, which designs the apprenticeships, said that the winner has made a "fantastic contribution".
