Tesco in Chicago expansion effort

Friday, 15 August 2008
Tesco is going to open a new office in the Chicago area of the US as it looks to create branches of its Fresh & Easy outlets there.

Executives from property firms are due to examine the location to look at a site that would be good enough for the purpose, reports the Independent.

Such a move is the clearest signal so far that Tesco wishes to expand its US operations further afield than the west coast of the country, the paper says.

But a spokeswoman at Tesco said to the news provider: "At the moment, our focus is very much on the west coast and opening stores there."

The Independent adds that operator of Tesco's Clubcard Dunnhumby already has premises in the Illinois city.

Earlier this week, Tesco daid that it is to make inroads into India with the development of a cash-and-carry business alongside technical support for retailer Trent.
