A petition launched in a bid to make the government rethink proposals that would see tobacco products placed below the counter in stores is proving popular, the Tobacco Retailers Alliance has stated.
Organiser of the petition and the body's spokesman Ken Patel said that response so far has been "brilliant" and many store owners are concerned about the possibility of changes.
He argued that the plans could threaten smaller outlets with closure because they will have to splash out on fresh furniture on top of the losses connected with the possible decreasing sales of such products.
Patel said: "Displaying tobacco is essential for fair competition between small and large retail outlets. Tobacco is a legal product, so why shouldn’t my adult customers see the range on offer and their prices?"
And all retailers should use their individual voices to ensure that their fears and heard, with written responses to the consultation a suggested measure, he added.
Katherine Graham, campaign manager, also stated that many retailers have been "deeply" concerned about the proposed developments.
