Wine sales growth in the UK is grinding to a halt as the economic downturn hits consumers’ disposable income, says the Sunday Telegraph.
It quotes Nielsen figures showing wine sales for the four weeks to 17 May down by 5%, or about 4.5 million bottles, against the same period last year.
This contrasts with 6% growth in the year to the end of February 2008.
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association blamed Budget tax rises for the decline, as well as the economic climate.
