Tesco staff and customers have raised more than £6.1m for their Charity of the Year, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The total is the result of 14 months of fundraising in stores, distribution centres and offices across the UK.
The amount raised breaks all previous fundraising records for a Tesco Charity of the Year partnership and comes despite the recent economic downturn.
Lucy Neville-Rolfe, corporate and legal affairs director at Tesco, said: “At a time when people are having to be more careful with their money, it’s very heartening to see that Tesco staff and customers have raised more than ever before for our Charity of the Year.
“Our partnership with Marie Curie Cancer Care has been so successful because working with our local communities is important to our staff and customers.
“That’s why we chose Marie Curie Cancer Care as our Charity of the Year – Marie Curie Nurses provide nursing care in homes across the UK and everyone can understand the difference that they make to local communities.
“Although we have smashed our original targets, we’re not surprised that our staff and customers have continued to be so generous to such a great cause.
“Everyone at Tesco is delighted that we have raised over £6.1m to help fund Marie Curie Nurses providing care for terminally ill people in their own homes across the UK.”
