UK’s towns get ready to celebrate their local shops

Waterloo Quarter will be launching a new website on Independents’ Day (Wednesday 4 July) when an increasing numbers of retailers, high streets and town centres will be are getting involved in the day.

Independents’ Day aims to celebrate the many and varied independent retailers in the UK, raising awareness of the contribution they make to high streets and local communities and encourage the public to buy at least one item from them on the day.

A wide range of activities and special promotions will run in different towns across the UK with the support of town centre managers, independent retailers and the National Skills Academy for Retail’s network of over 50 skills shops – including themed window displays, high street festivities, competitions and offers.

Helen Santer, director of operations, Waterloo Quarter, said: “On Independents’ Day we will be launching a new website which celebrates independents locally. A whole range of activities will take place in Waterloo across a wide range of independent businesses. From themed market stalls to a knitting class and a barbecue, there will be something for everyone. We are calling on local people to show their support for the wealth of different independent retailers that we have in Waterloo.”

Jane Rexworthy, director of Skills Solutions and head of the National Skills Academy for Retail said: “We are delighted to see so many retailers and town centres getting involved with two weeks still to go. We are calling on everyone to support their independent retailers on 4 July by buying at least one item from an independent retailer.

“We also hope that independents will take full advantage of the wide range of support there is available to them through the National Skills Academy for Retail network, whether that is training, mentoring or assistance in taking on additional staff through the new Retail Apprenticeship Training Agency (RATA).”
