The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) said that store owners should give customers other reasons to visit, on top of maximising the potential of “key lines” such as confectionery and soft drinks.

Head of marketing and business development at the NFRN Graeme Collins said that there are measures retailers can use to offset any potential lost business.

“With four simple steps they can create new traffic builders and revenue streams and get their shops in the best shape possible,” he commented.

Additionally, sales opportunities can be created by developing new sales opportunities, it said, such as promoting DVDs.

On top of this, it asserted that greater efficiency can be worthwhile via improved energy deals and collection of waste.

The NFRN recently criticised the Independent newspaper after it cut the margin offered to retailers to 22.2%.
