Spar Scotland wholesaler adds fruit and veg delivery

Spar Scotland wholesaler CJ Lang and Son is aiming to help its retailers compete better within the market by directly supplying their stores with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Previously, stores received direct deliveries from fresh produce provider Total Produce, but the wholesaler has now begun running central distribution which, it claims, will increase Spar shoppers’ perception of value within the fresh category.

It claims to have already supplied more than 5,000 cases from its depot in Dundee in its first week.

Gordon Airth, fresh food controller for CJ Lang and Son, claimed central distribution would deliver a number of tangible benefits to the group’s retailers, including reduced costs and better profit margins.

“Significantly, with Total Produce incurring fewer distribution costs, the reduction in wholesale selling price allows savings to be passed to retailers,” he said.

“Increases in profit margins and more competitive retail prices are a major benefit, not to mention the advantage of having one delivery with one invoice for each chilled delivery.”

This reduction, Airth said, would also cut down the administrative burden usually associated with deliveries.

“Busy retailers will have fewer orders, fewer delivery wagons at their store and less paperwork,” he added.
