Smallest stores can benefit from EPoS, says SPEDI

Small convenience stores, newsagents and rural shops who believe EPoS is not for them are wrong, says SPEDI Retail Software.

The Surrey-based company says that small shop owners have been persuaded that EPoS is only worthwhile for two and three checkout independents when the opposite is true.

David Mendus, managing director of SPEDI, said: “The number of larger, independently owned convenience stores now appears to have stabilised following years of closures, and our playback suggests that many smaller stores are very stable businesses within their own community.

“The smaller stores are probably outside symbol groups and rely totally on cash and carry. But entry-level EPoS would transform their profitability, and they can get into it by using their domestic broadband and computer to download cash and carry product listings, calculate pricing and control stock.”

The cost to the retailer would differ and would depend on the arrangement he had with the cash and carry but it would not be prohibitive. The cash and carry depot manager could explain the benefits and the costs. This approach would encourage the retailer to adopt larger scale EPoS at a later stage.
