Significant disparities exist between small businesses in the retail sector in their confidence and awareness of managing employment law, according to new research by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
The study shows that 33% of retail bosses report feeling confident in their understanding of employment law and their role as an employer; 33% also feel that employment law obligations are ‘not relevant’ to their business; and a further 20% report that they understand their obligations, but worry that they get it right.
The research also revealed the areas of employment law employers consider most and how often they do this. It found 12% of retail bosses thinking about their obligations at least weekly and 29% thinking about them at least monthly.
Commenting on the findings, James Lowman, chief executive at Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), said: “Managing employment law is a key responsibility for all businesses, and it’s important for SMEs to be aware, and stay on top of their obligations.
“As an organisation dedicated to developing businesses in the retail sector and encouraging strong leadership, the ACS fully encourages all bosses to use the free help and advice that is available to them, so that they can focus on investing their time and energy on making their businesses a success.”
