NFRN sceptical over Tesco’s booze stance

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) says it is sceptical over Tesco’s announcement yesterday that it is willing to discuss raising the price of alcohol to combat problem drinking.

NFRN national president Colin Finch said: “It is positive that Tesco’s is willing to enter the discussion.

“Let’s not forget, however, that any increase in prices is actually a benefit to supermarkets, who will maximize their profits while maintaining display and not really addressing the social problem.

“The NFRN is one of the first that has been discussing alcohol and its effects on communities and will continue to debate the issue as a whole – and not just parts of it that might grab attention for a short while and not constitute a real solution.

“Small and independent retailers are faced with the problems that alcohol creates every day and they are willing to work with the government and the community for a resolution.”
