Newsagents call on Darling to scrap National Insurance increases

Independent newsagents are calling on Chancellor Alistair Darling to scrap proposals to increase National Insurance contributions by 1% in 2011 and for any future changes to the National Minimum Wage to be based on the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission.

Ahead of next week’s budget and in its annual submission to the Chancellor, under the umbrella of the Independent Retailers Confederation, the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) is also demanding no further increase in VAT.

The NFRN also want the Government to apply small business rate relief automatically to businesses that qualify under the Small Business Rate Relief scheme as this will provide immediate support for business at this difficult economic time.

Darling is also being urged to continue to put pressure on banks to provide access to finance to small businesses.

In a statement the NFRN said: “While many independent newsagents have endured the recession, they nonetheless remain under intense pressure and continue to face very challenging times.”
