Murder inquiry after post office robbery victim dies

A major police investigation was under way in a quiet Yorkshire village where a 40-year-old post office owner was found dead in her store.

North Yorkshire Police officers were questioning drivers in Melsonby today after the body of Diane Garbutt was found in the village store and post office.

Police said last night that Mrs Garbutt was the victim of a robbery and launched a murder inquiry. Officers were also speaking to people walking past the post office as the force appealed for anyone who was in the Melsonby area between 4am and 9am yesterday to come forward.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said a man, believed to have been wearing a black, tight balaclava over his face, a dark blue, long-sleeved T-shirt and dark blue-black jeans, “broke in to the post office and stole a substantial amount of cash.”

No details have been given about how Mrs Garbutt died.
