Independent retailers aid Help for Heroes with £25,000 donation

The Making A Difference – Locally (MADL) charity, created by Nisa-Today’s and Costcutter Supermarkets, has donated £25,000 to Help for Heroes which will help it with it fundraising campaign to provide recovery centres for wounded service men and women.

The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities.

The stores participating in the scheme are all members of Nisa-Today’s or independent retailers who are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group.

Angela Barber, MADL charity board representative, said “Choosing which national charities to support through MADL has been an extremely difficult process as there are so many good causes all worthy of our help.

“However, Help for Heroes is clearly a cause many people are passionate about right now and one that provides a real lifeline to our service men and women who deserve our support.

“We are happy that we are able to make this donation to them.

“We know it will be put to very good use, making a difference to countless peoples’ lives in communities across the country and that is what MADL is all about.”

James MacKeddie, from Help for Heroes, said “We would like to thank everyone at Making a Difference – Locally for supporting Help for Heroes.

“We are extremely grateful for the donation of £25,000 and the demonstration of support for our wounded service personnel.

“Every penny raised makes a big difference to our heroes and will help us enormously to provide a lifeline to the future for so many.”

The MADL charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted in-store being allocated to a retailer’s MADL charity fund.

For example, this month for every box of Kellogg’s Special K purchased in store 2p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund.

Numerous products are promoted in this way each month. The store’s MADL fund is then donated to the retailer’s chosen charity. The MADL charity celebrated its one-year anniversary in May 2009 raising a total of £1m in its first year.
