The owner of two Budgens stores in London has made a stand against the banana price war being waged by the major supermarkets.
Andrew Thornton has started a campaign – Play Fair, Trade Fair – and will donate profits from banana sales to Banana Link which supports workers in Costa Rica.
“With UK banana prices now at 1/3 of the real price they were 7 years ago, there is only one loser in all this and that is banana farmers and workers in the developing world,” said Thornton.
“We at Thornton’s Budgens are not going to play in this wreckless game and for the month of November will be donating all our banana profits to a plantation workers’ organisation in Costa Rica.
“Our appeal to you – if you care about the plight of banana workers in the developing world is don’t buy cheap bananas in the supermarkets, buy them elsewhere.”
Asda forced the other leading retailers to slash prices when it lowered its own banana prices to their lowest level for 14 years.
