Budgens retailers who are fitting doors to their chillers are enjoying energy savings of up to 35%.
Dan Quest, Budgens sales director, said: “With energy prices predicted to rise by 25% to 60% by 2016, we are working together with our retail partners to identify energy saving opportunities.”
The temperature in chillers is better managed when doors are fitted. This leads to better shelf life of products and ultimately less waste.
Customer perception, too, is that product quality is improved. And the knock-on effect is that the ambient store temperature in that area of the store is improved, reducing the need for additional heating. This improves the ambience in store and customer shopping experience, which encourages longer browsing time.
When doors were fitted on the chillers at Budgens Trinity Mead the temperature in store increased from nine to 13 degrees in the first aisle.
Store owner Dominic Yarnold said: “Fitting doors on my chillers is the best thing I have done recently. The customers love them, they look great, the store is warmer as a result and I have made significant energy savings. I will now be putting these in my next store.”
