Nisa-Today's member Harry Tuffin has halved plastic bag use at one of its stores, six months before a target set by the government. To mark the achievement Tuffin has placed a life-size wooden Polar bear sculpture outside the shop in Churchstoke, Shropshire. The bears appear on the bag for life handed out by the retailer as an alternative to plastic bags. In October, the firm said it is to begin trialling a waste packaging service in the new year. Commenting on the plastic bags reduction, managing director Paul Delves said: "It is a great achievement for us to have reduced our plastic bag consumption this early and we couldn't have done it without the help of our customers and the local community in general. "The polar bear sculpture has attracted a lot of attention - even local children coming to the store and asking for their pictures taken with it!" Last week, a number of the UK's biggest supermarkets said they have signed up to the agreement with the government, to halve plastic bag use by spring. Andy Hancock, who has appeared on the BBC show Countryfile, sculpted the bear. The East of England Co-Operative Society has also said that it has saved seven million plastic bags since it stopped giving them away free in stores in September. Chief executive Richard Samson said: "We were hoping that we could achieve an ambitious reduction in the order of 75% to 80%, but with a fantastic effort from our store colleagues right across East Anglia, we've easily beaten that figure with an 84% reduction overall!"
