Repeat offender custody option welcomed by convenience sector

Friday, 12 December 2008
The Association of Convenience Stores has welcomed the announcement from the Sentencing Advisory Panel that custody will be retained as an option punishment for repeat shop thieves.

According to the panel, drug and alcohol treatment orders can be an alternative to custodial sentences.

Chief executive James Lowman said: "We welcome the Sentencing Advisory Panel's decision to retain the option of custody for shop theft.

"It is important that magistrates have a range of sanctions to punish and deter repeat offenders. Shop theft is a crime that harms livelihoods and jobs and there has to be an effective deterrent."

He added: "We are also glad that the Sentencing Advisory Panel followed our recommendation regarding sentencing for breach of Anti-Social Behavhour Orders. It is important that there is a credible punishment in place for breaching an order."

The comments came after a survey released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) found shop owners think crime will increase during the recession.

And the BRC also said shoplifting penalties should be reformed, not totally abandoned.
