Tobacco smuggling 'causes deaths'

Monday, 13 October 2008
At least 4,000 people die a year as a result of illegal tobacco smuggling, according to a new piece of research.

Professor Robert West from the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre and his colleagues said in a report that this number of smokers become ill because smuggled tobacco is cheaper than legitimate goods.

The authors said that while efforts have been made by the government to quell the issue, more resources have to be set aside so that the situation is improved further, reports the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS).

Because targets created to cut down on smuggling were abandoned earlier in the year, they have claimed HM Revenue and Customs cannot be accountable for poor performance in this area.

Improved measures have to be introduced by the UK Border Agency so that greater controls can be imposed on illegal tobacco operations, the authors concluded.

The ACS recently called on local government authorities to make sure that illegal tobacco sales are minimised.
