Sustainable bags scheme 'popular'

Friday, 22 August 2008
A campaign that allows independent retailers to encourage shoppers to purchase reusable carrier bags is proving to be a success, organisers have said.

More than 70 retailers have signed up to Bags of Change since it began and customers who take on the environmental initiative can obtain 10% discounts.

And Bags of Change said that independent retailers who sign up to the project get a valuable amount of promotion because a different one is profiled each time somebody clicks on its homepage.

So Organic's Samantha Burton claimed that consumers are "excited" about the initiative and they have embraced the move.

"The bags are beautiful and it's a great idea: a loyalty scheme for independents where you don’t need yet another plastic card to fill up your purse," she said.
