Once the food is converted into energy it is pumped into the national grid and can be used by about 500 homes, Waitrose revealed.
Recycling and waste manager at the retailer Arthur Sayer said the company is constantly looking at ways that it can aid the environment.
“So far the signs are really positive – and this looks to be a sustainable way of eliminating the need to send waste food to landfill,” he commented.
Managing director at Cawleys Jon Cawley added that Waitrose has “worked hard” during a trial period of the scheme.
