Tesco has launched an investigation into claims in the Daily Telegraph that some workers in its stores in Malaysia are earning as little as 8p an hour.
The newspaper said its own investigations had discovered that dozens of people subcontracted to work up to 80 hours in a week in Tesco’s supermarkets in Malaysia did not meet international ethical standards.
It highlighted migrant workers from Bangladesh who typically earn up to 750 Malaysian ringgit (£117) gross per month.
Workers cleaning Tesco’s floors are paid similarly yet, after deductions, are often left with £20 to £50 a month for up to 360 hours.
Tesco said it insisted on the highest standards of welfare for workers both directly employed or engaged by contractors and promised to act.
