Tesco Extra pushes plastic bags under the counter

Tesco is moving plastic bags under the counter at its Extra hypermarkets, according to the Daily Mail.

Although the bags will still be free to customers, shoppers will now have to ask if they want a plastic carrier in Extra stores.

A roll out across other UK stores is expected after this initial pilot scheme.

In February, the Daily Mail launched the “Banish the Bags” campaign, and reported retailers had 12 months to introduce a charge for plastic bags or be forced to by law.

This campaign received the backing of prime minister Gordon Brown.

Marks and Spencer introduced a 5p charge on food carrier bags in May.
