Supermarkets in Scottish bags pledge

Managers of all the major supermarkets have said that they will attempt to lower the number of plastic bags used at these stores in Scotland by spring.

A target to cut the number of bags used by half is not law but ministers in the country have said that regulations may be introduced if the companies do not adhere to the voluntary conditions.

The measures were outlined at the first supermarket summit to take place – an event led by first minister Alex Salmond.

Director of the Scottish Retail Consortium Fiona Moriarty said that the involvement of all the main players in the industry proves they are committed to helping the environment.

Morrisons director of public affairs Richard Taylor said that the company has made “significant progress” in its quest to give the environment a lift.

“[We] are on track to reach our target of reducing the environmental impact of standard bags by 25 per cent by the end of this year,” he commented.

Other retailers to set the green targets were Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Asda, Somerfield and Waitrose.

The Guardian recently said that bosses at supermarkets got involved in a heated argument with environment secretary Hilary Benn over the use of plastic bags.
