UK supermarkets have performed badly in a new survey looking at the impact of in-store freezers on the environment.
Frozen food specialist Iceland came bottom of the survey conducted by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), after failing to provide information on what it is doing to boost credentials in this area.
Marks & Spencer (M&S) was top of the firm’s league table, because of efforts to improve freezing equipment and make it more environmentally-friendly.
Yet discount retailers Lidl and Aldi fared less well for also refusing to divulge any details of their green efforts.
The EIA’s Fionnuala Walravens said: “Our survey results are hugely disappointing.
“Even though supermarkets know that their refrigeration chemicals are a major contributor to climate change, they’re not yet doing anything much about it.”
M&S and Tesco have both signed green lighting deals in the past few months.
