Shoppers back end to free plastic bags – Daily Mail poll

Three-quarters of Britons believe supermarkets should stop giving away free plastic bags, according to a poll published in the Daily Mail over the weekend.

The survey – part of the newspaper’s “Banish the Bags” campaign – also found 44% of the public wanted the Government to make retailers levy a small charge on plastic bags to encourage shoppers to switch to reusable carriers.

Some 27% wanted local councils to have the power to ban bags in their area, while 10% wanted the Government to levy a tax on plastic carriers.

Meanwhile, the Mail claimed Tesco had signalled it may defy the Government and continue to hand out free plastic bags.

But it said the retailer had pledged to try to reduce the number given out at tills by an additional one billion this year.
