Sainsbury’s said that 200 trees were used in the making of the shop but that it has planted double this to compensate for the loss.
Commercial director at the supermarket Neil Sachdev argued that Sainsbury’s is leading the way in terms of sustainable building practices.
“We’ve been keen to experiment with a number of energy saving measures here, from sun pipes, which provide amazing natural light, to using a timber frame rather than steel,” he said.
