Plastic bags are not biggest problem, says Sainsbury’s King

People are obsessed with plastic bags and this is helping to understate the cause for environmental change, according to Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King.

People are obsessed with plastic bags and this is helping to understate the cause for environmental change, according to Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King.

But King claimed in an Observer interview that bags are not the “biggest issue” in this area and instead cited packaging and wasted food.

He urged the government to attempt to tackle the issue by getting local councils to introduce new recycling schemes.

“Tackling the plastic bag problem does not solve the wider issue of how we are consuming limited resources,” he told the paper.

And he suggested that customers at Sainsbury’s generally reuse up to 25% more bags because they are “engaged” with environmental concerns.

Plastic back reduction goals have been derailed, King said, because the chancellor Alistair Darling threatened a tax if supermarkets do not cut down on the amount they give out.
