Londoners call for action on plastic bags

Nearly 60% of Londoners want a ban on plastic bags, according to the result of a public consultation conducted by the capital’s councils.

The options were put out for consultation in September and more than 2,000 responses were received.

More than 90% of respondents wanted some action taken to curb plastic bag use.

Some 58% called for an outright ban on throwaway shopping bags, while 34% favoured a levy. Only 7.5% wanted to maintain the status quo.

Of those calling for an outright ban, a “sizeable proportion” said they would be happy with a levy as a compromise option.

Council leaders will now weigh up the options before deciding whether to put a proposal forward to Parliament as part of the tenth London Local Authorities Bill.
