UK firms may have to reveal how they are going to help the environment under the climate change bill, being debated in Parliament today.
Climate change minister Joan Ruddock said the move will mean there will be a greater amount of transparency on the green agenda.
A government amendment to the bill means that UK firms woluld have to publicly reveal greenhouse emissions by 2012.
Ruddock said: “It aims to stimulate businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards a productive low carbon future.”
“Investing in low carbon alternatives is the best way to deliver on the law and move Britain out of recession and into a greener more prosperous future,” added executive director at Friends of the Earth Andy Atkins.
Campaigners would be able to identify firms responsible for polluting along with those performing well under the new legislation, if it is passed.
