Asda opens eco store

Asda is to open what it claims is the most eco-friendly supermarket in the UK today, based in Bootle, Merseyside.

The shop is 35% more energy efficient than any of its existing outlets, Asda said, and features include green lighting, fridges and a grass roof.

Instead of open-fronted cabinets, the fridges have doors on them. The building itself has been constructed using renewable and recycled materials.

Head of store design Bob Simpson said: “What is pioneering here is how we’ve put all the technologies together and, more importantly, made them work.

“It’s all simple existing technology but when combined will cut the carbon dioxide use by up 50% or more.”

Julian Palin, head of sustainability and ethics, added: “It’s great to see the project finally come to fruition. I hope that the creation of our latest low carbon store will help raise awareness of some of the ecological issues we all face.”

In August, Sainsbury’s said that its new sustainable store in Dartmouth, Devon, will help to markedly reduce energy bills.
