Asda joins packaging council in green drive

Asda has joined an industry packaging council with the aim of boosting its green credentials.

Today it revealed it has joined the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (Incpen), in an effort to make its supply chain more sustainable.

The supermarket chain is now set to pool its knowledge with suppliers, packaging manufacturers and other retailers in order to minimise the impact of waste on the environment.

Packaging buyer Shane Monkman said: “Our customers tell us time and time again that they want to buy good quality food which isn’t packaged excessively, can be easily recycled and has a long shelf life.

“By pooling our resources in a forum dedicated to packaging, we can help pioneer new technologies which will ultimately help our customers reduce the amount of packaging and food waste they throw away – helping them save money in the process.”

Asda will work alongside other firms under the guidance of Incpen to offer improvements and reduce consumption and lower costs.

In January, the major supermarkets in the UK agreed to a new scheme to try and reduce packaging waste.
