Supermarket bosses have clashed with environment secretary Hilary Benn over the issue of plastic bags, according to The Guardian.
The newspaper said the clash came on Tuesday evening at a meeting with Benn attended by Tesco chief Sir Terry Leahy, Sir Stuart Rose of Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's Justin King and Andy Bond of Asda, among others.
It quotes one supermarket chief executive saying the debate became “very heated”.
The retailers want the Government to backtrack on plans to impose a levy on plastic bags if reduction targets are not met voluntarily.
They warned Benn that he risked losing their co-operation.
