Supermarkets called to Downing Street over food price fears

Supermarket bosses have been called to Downing Street today for an emergency summit on rising food prices by Chancellor Alistair Darling, according to The Times.

Representatives of the National Farmers’ Union and the British Retail Consortium will also attend, reports the newspaper.

Tesco and Asda confirmed they would be attending.

Darling is concerned at the effects of rising food prices on inflation, which is hitting the poorest households hardest.
